Hello all, i have a 2002 stingray 18LX with a merc 3.0L alpha one.

All my gauges on my instrument panel work fine except for my temperature gauge. I checked all the fuses and they look good. Whats my next option?

First step is to ground the temp sender's wire...with the key in the "RUN/ON" position...and see if the gauge pegs to the right (hot).

Let us know what happened!

nope, the temp guage is the only guage that does not move

Did you just move the key to "ON"? Or did you also ground the wire at the sender....

If you grounded the wire...and the gauge failed to 'peg'...then you have the next step to do. This will not be easy, since you need to determine that the wire has continuity from the sender end to the end at the gauge. The distance from these two ends makes this the problem, as you need to run the continuity check of the entire length. If you don't have the multimeter to do this, then you may have a friend that can help. Remove both ends of the wire, and check for integrity (no breaks).

The other option is easier, but would require a temp gauge that you know is working. Here, you would just transfer the helm wires to the good gauge (no need to install for this) and run the engine. I have a new gauge that you can have for $10 and shipping if you want to do this. It will probably not match what you currently have, but will serve as either a test gauge, or if you're not fussy work as your running gauge. (Hope that I don't get in trouble for offering this...since this site sells gauges!)

Happy boating!

An additional add-on question is: If you ground it and it does go all the way to the right does that mean I need a new temp gauge?

Thanks.

Nope...the gauge would be working as advertised.

The obvious culprit would now become the sending unit.

Happy boating!
