i have a 2001 mercury 250 efi. i normally run at about 4800 to 5000 rpm's at about 3/4 throttle and burn about 22 gals an hour. the other day at 3/4 throttle i was barely hitting 4000 rpm's and was burning 30 gals an hour. right as i was reaching port i started running normal again. i replaced my plugs but they did not seem completely burnt just a little black. also one was very loose and was leaking fuel from that cylinder. motor seems to be running good now. could my plugs have been the trouble or do you think this could be the begining of the onset of an intermitting problem?

It could have been. Time will tell, it is hard to guess keep your eyes on anything unusual.

Make sure you have the right plugs. Black deposits can mean wrong heat range. They should be tan or gray in color if firing properly. I think your motor calls for surface gap plugs. By the way, gas here is $2.31 a gallon. At your gph, $52 an hour...ouch!

Jerry
