Bought this on ebay the other day just because it was so cheap that if I can't make it work then I've not lost anything. It's quicksilver part number 78799.

Question is, can I fit/adapt this to take a temp reading from my 84 type v ignition 50hp blueband?

Has anyone got any idea how to test it too? I've tried dunking it in a cup of hot water with a ohm-meter connected but I don't seem to get a change in reading as the water cools down.
Re: Temp sender

That's an overheat switch... Designed to go off when the metal of the head reaches 245F (or so) degrees. It's not a temp sensor that connects to a guage.

Re: Temp sender

Cheers Kclost. The bloke sold me it as a temperature sender...Goes off when hotter than boiling water then? That's HOT!

Should it create a short circuit when it hits 245F then? If so I can make up a bracket that'll hold it to my head that'll automatically stop the engine if it overheats...or something like that. Any suggestions?

Re: Temp sender

For that switch it is designed to go into an already forged recess in the head water jacket cover and head... Now it does not touch water, it goes through the water jacket and and into another recessed area of the head.. It never touches water as the water jacket cover gasket seals this area off where it fits into. I dont think you need a bracket for this, it is more of a press fit type thing..

It measures metal not water! Hence the 245F...

And yes it does short or make continuity to set of the alarm.

Re: Temp sender

yeah I figured that was why it was set to over boiling point-but realised that if thats the case I havent got a way of testing without trashing it-which is why I asked about the continuity.

Sounds like it's not practical to retro-fit then. Cheers for the info.
