I have a Mercury 50 hp 2001 ELPTO that when I turn it on the temperature alarm starts beeping, it's actally cold. I pulled out the temperature sender but the beeping didn't stop. I turned the key left just barely enough not to stop the motor and the beeping ended. so what would the problem be?

Thanks

Do you have a beep-beep-beep, or a continuous tone? The beeping is and oil problem the tone is temp.

Engine not running.....

1. A continuous tone when the key is turned to on is a module test failure if it doesn't stop. If it stops after a second or two it is normal and the module is good.

2. If when the key is turned to the on the position, the module emits one long tone then stops and then starts again with a a continuous tone, the temp switch is bad.

3. If it goes to short tones and the oil level is good then it is a bad sensor switch in the oil tank.

If it's frustating the heck out of you, rip it out, put a temp gauge in and remove the oil pump and go to pre-mix. If this is a Optimax DFI motor, then just replace the motor with a E-Tec...:) and live happily ever after...

Thanks Doug57, and thanks again Sschfer.

What is the module?, because the tone doesn't stop.To be onest I cut the wire already. I will actually by the temp gauge, but I really like the oil injection, it's very comfortable, and by the way I will check what an Optimax DFI motor is and the E-Tec stuff, because I really want to live happily ever after.

Thanks again.

Don't get too comfortable with the oil injection. It's a good system but it is mechanical and can fail. Then you have had a bad day! I took mine off and opted to mix my own, you just have to decide for yourself. And if you cut the wire to the warning buzzer (or screamer) and something happens to the oil system that temp gauge will be worth about two cents. Just do a form search for beep-beep-beep and you can find out how to test the module. I would check the oil lines for any sign of a crack just like you would check for a gas leak before every trip. I know that's over kill but better safe than sorry. The module is the brain of the warning system on the engine.

Thanks Doug, but I gues my motor doesn't have a module, mine is a 50 h.p., but I will check on the oil sensor.

I agree, check module, get a book. I like a temp gauge and pressure gauge. Once you heat that merc expect failure on on oil injection, if its same as older models with the teflon gear on the crank- it will fail.
