Temperature and water pressure guage installation?

Is it possible to add these instruments to my 1979 Evinrude 140 powerhead to assist in heading off any future problems. Just curious if there are any kits on the market that I can purchase or is it possible to "fabricate" something at home in order to shave a little cost and still be just as effective. I'm open for suggestions. Thanks a bunch...........ALAN

Neither the temp or water pressure gauges are expensive and Yes they can be added. You can buy them right here on iBoats. (Teleflex or Faria brand). Water pressure gauges are not electric. They work just like a speedometer (water compressing air in a tube from the engine to the gauge). Temp gauges are electric and use a thermister (temperature sensing resistor) better called a temp sender that either screws into the water jacket or attaches under a head bolt and measures head temperature. Be aware also that there are temp gauges for outboards as well as I/Os. Be sure you get one for an outboard.

When you install the pressure guage.

Be sure to use the least amount of tubing .

And avoid dips , slack etc. In other words run it as staright and level , or slightly up hill.

Which is probably necessary to reach guage.

You'll get the most accurate reading this way.

The instructions that come with the guages, should explain this.

If you have a tell tale, its a good and easy place to tap into the coolant line.

The main thing when you get it installed .

Take note of the pressure readings , at different rpm's.

Then you can watch for signs of a cooling problem .

Don't worry about your readings , being similar, to anyone elses .

As long as their consistent.

Re: Temperature and water pressure guage installation?

It's advised that you install a new impeller when you add the gauge. Then note the idle and wide open throttle readings. This gives you a benchmark so if you notice pressure changes in the future you know something is amiss. Without a new impeller you have no clue as to what really is "normal" for your engine. As KY says, don't be concerned if someone says my engine runs at XX PSI -- yours should too. No two engines will run exactly the same pressure. They may not be plumbed the same, may not be the same gauge, etc.

The Teleflex installation instructions are found in their "trouble Shooting" guide.

Copy the link to your browser without the quotation marks and then scroll down. The installation instructions are in the right column.

iboats sells the teleflex guages.
