Hi guys! I've been working on a 1972 65 HP Johnson. On the advice of my last post I removed the lower unit to check the water pump impellor. It was a good thing too because the impellor needed to be replaced. While I had the lower unit off I pulled the solenoids and valve plunger assembly to clean them and readjust them. The motor won't go into reverse. I put the lower unit back on, refilled the gear case with gear oil. I hooked up water to it and started it up. The motor seems to be running hotter now. When I turn on the water it circulates up and out the propellor. When the motor is started the thermostat opens after about 1-2 minutes. The motor continues to slowly heat up. I don't have any melt sticks for 125 degrees and 163 degrees. But I did use temp. gun to see the temp. on the cylinder head and when it got up to 173 degrees I turned it off. What direction should the impellor blades be pointing when the impellor is inside the water pump housing with the housing removed off the motor? They are pointing clockwise. What do you guys think?
