I've read about sticks you can put on your motor and make sure that it is not over heating. I was wondering if someone can guide me as to where to get them @.

I have one too but I can't say that I trust it that much. Seems it gives a different temperature depending on how far away from the object your pointing at. Is there an ideal distance? Mine is a mastercraft from Canadian Tire. Thanks, Rick.

Re: Temporary Temperature reading

The closer you get to the source, the smaller the area measured, giving a more pinpoint (accurate) reading. If you get too far away, the area measured expands too much and you can get inaccurate readings. Go with the gun over the thermomelt sticks.

Re: Temporary Temperature reading

Some manuals put the threshold at 163? and some at 170?.

The thermostat is 143? so at idle with no load you should be close to that number as the thermostat opens and closes.

Clymer manuals list a 170? threshold at full throttle. The recommended thermomelt stick in the factory manual is 163?.

The low temperature stick was 125? because if it did not melt the thermostat was stuck open (not functioning) so the engine was running too cold.

BTW, Clymer advises not to measure the temperature at the center of the cylinder head and that the source cooling water should be less than 80?.
