Hi I am new to forum and can anyone help as follows.I have a Tern 6 hp motor air cooled lower leg water cooled. This is considered vintage, all I have is serial no as A 50057 Valmet Oy Jyska Works Finland also Tehdis ?
Owners manual in English,so there must have been a dealer in Britain if not Scotland.I am hoping to restore this engine, any information welcome. Was there a Volvo Penta connection where can I find more info spares etc.It came to me with a Tabur 3 Polypropylene dinghy 10 feet and yamaha 4hp all still in good order.I hope to use the TERN as a back up it was a powerful engine for a small dinghy, the yamaha is running well after a 14 year layup.Thanking everyone in advance.

Hi,
I'm restoring a Tern 6hp also. I have absolutely no info on it and would love a look at your manual!!! I'm replacing a piston ring and trying to get the old girl back to a decent state and have loads of questions-what decade is she from? What petrol/oil mixture does she take? Spark plug gap? points gap? the list goes on......!! If you could shed any light on her at all I would really really appreciate it!!

I have no knowledge about a Tern outboard motor.

The only thing I know is that Valmet is an incredible company making the premier logging equipment in the world. The also built the Porsche 944 automobiles, and continue to build the Boxster and it's hardtop counterpart for Porsche.

They Finns are fantastic at whatever they do, and build premium chainsaws, too.

I sort of doubt the OP is still monitoring this thread, since it is a couple of years old.

Hi Eugene, even though its a old thread like F_R said I still couldn't resist checking into it, seems your outboard has most likley a mahle engine, I know mahle makes filters and auto parts but never knew the built engines, my best guess its a Schnuerle design loop charged air cooled with some form of water cooling to the bottom of the engine, I read that the 3-5hp models did infact use a Tecumseh 2 cycle engine, I have copyed you a youtube link, this fellow seems to know about these outboards maybe you can glean some info. And next time start you a new thread then we can go on and on about it and not feel guilty....LOL

Hi guys-thanks very much for the replies. You're correct about the finns-it seems they've put together a good air cooled engine here. It's so easily worked on-everything is simply designed with excellent tolerances. Bing carb too.
Mrcrabs, you're spot on about the Mahle engine-the piston is Mahle as is the engine head! The piston is a 51mm one and I obtained a suitable piston ring and fitted it easily enough with excellent compression.
A good carb clean and plenty of grease all round, an oily 20:1 petroil mix and she started after a few pulls! That's the good news. The bad news is that she has now eaten two woodruff keys on the flywheel after two starts-a key every start. I'm using lawnmower woodruff keys but do outboards use keys made of hardened steel?
Thanks in advance.
