Went w/ my father today to test drive his first boat. It's a used Bayliner Sierra 2355 (I think). I wasn't fond of it in the first place because:
It's a 1994
Reman Jasper Engine w/ only 226hrs on boat
Had a leaking linkage
etc
The owner took my Dad out a week ago for a ride and couldn't get on plane because of the leak. He had it repaired and we went today for a sea trial. He decided to bring a surveyor.
The hull was all banged up from hitting things. Nothing too bad. Mostly cosmetic, but at this point I wasn't happy as it was obvious they PO's hadn't spent much time caring for it.
After a dry look over we splashed it. The owner didn't want to come bacuse he was afraid he'd get sea sick because it was windy. How do you own a boat and can't go out on a mildly windy day??
Either way, I was nominated to drive as I have boating experience and my father sat behind me. The owner shoved us off right into the bottom of the ramp. I tried to turn it but BAM! right into the bottom of the ramp. Checked the prop and all and it made it thru just fine. Got it out on the water and it was running OK. We started to come back in and dropped to low RPM in a limited area and the engine just died. Would not turn over, nothing. I managed to finally get it running and it would not stay running. I essentially had to rev the motor and slam it into gear so it didn't die out. I got fed up and turned the controls over the the surveyor to see if he could baby it in. He just nosed it toward the dock and floored it. We came in pretty hot but that's all we could do. Slammed the dock pretty good but no damage to the boat. Got off, called the survey quits, and walked away.
What a frickin mess. That's why you should always do a sea trial LOL.
