test drive...had to paddle back

Took out my jonboat today. First time test drive. Just bought it last week used but appeared to be in overall good shape. Anyways went up to the lake and was going to attempt some crappie fishing a short time later the motor just started sputtering and then shut off and it wouldnt crank for about 5 min. It kept shutting off and got harder and harder to start back. weird thing is it idled fine in neutral but when i put it in forward it just seemed to not have any power when it would run and then just shut down. thanks for any help
