test fuel pump

Hi,

I had a 1996 mercury 40 hp elpto, it won't start since last weekend, I checked the plugs, they all works fine, I want to confirm the fuel pump works as well,
Can I test my fuel pump like this way?

1, take out the pipe from fuel pump 'out',
2, squeeze primer bulb, if gas coming out from 'out' port, the fuel line if ok
3, start my motor, if there is no gas coming out from 'out' port, the fuel pump is broken.

What is your engine s/n as there are 2/3 and 4 cylinder models.
