Is there a quick and dirty way to start this motor without the controls? I can wire up anything that needs to be done, and I have access to all kinds of semiconductors. I just want to get this thing running on a stand so I can see what work it needs done. I am replaceing an I/O setup with it and haven't gotten to the controls or even transom for that matter. Any ideas or diagrams or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually Jason, all ya' need is battery cables and a jumper.....fuel to.

Connect the battery cables to the engine, then use the jumper to jump the solenoid at the small terminals on the solenoid. Look for the terminal with the white wire. Put one end of the jumper to battery pos. and touch the terminal with the other end. You will manually have to choke the engine also and give it a little gas.

Keep in mind there will be no way electrically to stop the engine. You will have to choke it to get it to stop.

And don't ferget to put muffs on it also.

Since this is a battery CD ignition, you'll have to put 12 volts to the ignition also. And it will be in gear when it starts (unless you "hot wire" it into neutral) so be careful.

Since youre going to mount it and use it why not just get the controls now? Youre gonna need them later anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replys, I figured it wouldn't be too hard. As to the reason I'm not mounting it right away, I have to rebuild the transom on the boat, and it's too cold outside to do any 'glass work. Also, I figured it will be easier to rebuild the motor if it's on a stand that I can move around. Now, as far as jumping it into neutral, what color wires do I connect? Can I wire in a switch temporarily to shift gears? I want to check as much as I can with this thing so I can fix it (if needed) before I actually mount it in the spring.

you have 2 wires coming from the lower unit, green and blue. power to neither means lower unit is in forward, boat wont start in forward! power to one wire is neutral and both is reverse. i have 1970 85 hp v4, i know your woes... i ran my boat without proper controls perfectly fine.
i used a 3 way push / pull type switch for the shifting, since my 3 button shifter that came with it was badly destroyed... pushed in all the way, it cut off all voltage so there fore it was on forward gear.. pulled out to selector number 1 was voltage to 1 wire, therefore nuetral, and pulled out all the way, selector number 2 was voltage on both wires, therefore it was in reverse. and as for starting, i used a single red, push button style switch, momentary on for starting purposes, wired into the starter selonoid at the post with the two red wires.... and to kill it, i wired in a simple on/ off switch to the purple wire going to the big ugly wire bank, and when that switch was off, motor died since voltage was cut out of ignition... now all of these colors of wires are from memeory seeing how its late and all, but youll get the jist of it ! :)
with this set up , it technically eliminates the need for a wire harnes also, seeing as to how it also eliminates a key.. you can add a push style switch later if you want to use the electric choke... its all up to you....
