tested my lowrance X51pro through-hull transducer and it was inconsistent...

so i test mounted my transducer in the bilge area using some marine sealant/adhesive and was getting readings (mostly was just confirming it was working based on the depth reading) but it was inconsistent. It seemed to stay at a depth and not update as i moving, then other times it would update constantly with movement. I was mostly just powering it on and off to try to 'reset' it and checked to make the sure the transducer was mounted solidly and wasn't moving. should i check something else or should i attribute the flakiness to the sealant causing issues and hope that a good epoxy and better sanding of the mount area and transducer head will improve performance?
