Hi Guys,
I believe the stator on my '90 model 90 horse Johnson (TJ90TLESB)is bad and I need a little help trouble shooting it.It has four wires coming from it, a yellow and a yellow/gray going to a terminal block, and a brown/tan and a brown/black going to the single CD-4 powerpack.
on the yellow I have about 7.5 VDC and on the yellow/gray I have 11.8 VDC. On the brown/tan I get about 9 VAC (with a friend turning starter)and on the brown/black I get about 18 VAC.
Does any of this sound right?

Readings aside, why did you think the system was bad? That is, what were the symptoms?

My tach quit working, my battery quit charging, and the boat is very slow at WOT and sometimes wont even come on plane. at first I thought it was the regulator/rectifier but I replaced it last and it didnt help.

Re: Testing a Stator?

I get 420 ohms across the two brown wires and no continuity to ground on either one

450 ohms sounds very low,do all cylinders fire?sounds like the stator is weak.but like i said i am really not shure on o.m.c. engines. if you needs parts try www.seilermarine.com mike has some great prices.on mer @ force engine the yellow wires are the chargeing wires ,not shure on omc. :p

The 2 brown wires should have about 200 volts with a peak reading meter, at cranking rpms sparkplugs in. The 2 yellow wires should have about 18 volts with peak reading meter. Not real sure about numbers, cant get to manual. Check between the 2 wires. If you are checking with one tester lead to wire, one lead to ground, your results show the stator is shorted to ground.
