Testing an outborard out of water

I have an older Mercury 700 motor, probably around 1974ish. I want to test it before putting the boat in the water. How do I get water to it? Do I need ear muffs or will the garden hose go in the end of the prop shaft?

Use muffs, the exhaust is from the prop. A barrel works well too, if you can get a big enough one.

Big trash can works. Just be sure to keep the hose turned on in the trash can.
