Is there any way to test the electronic ignition or powerpack on a 1978 25 hp Johnson? Also can the electronic ignition work sometimes or intermittenly(spelling?) if its going bad or when it goes bad does it just quite working altogtether? Also the what exactly does the idle screw do on the side of the motor, iguess thats what it is. Its on opposite side of shifter where tiller linkage connects to powerhead. I dont know exactly which way to turn it or how far.

Yes they can work intermittening when they are going bad. What is the motor doing exactly. Is it loosing fire on one cylinder or both. Does it quit running all together or just misses. I would check for spark and if I had none I would replace them.

First thing you should do is get yourself a manual, try outboardbooks.com or ebay, you will want an original service manual. What are the symptoms? The diodes in the power pack can be tested for a rough running engine with an ohmmeter set to HIGH ohms scale.

The symptoms are its hard to start after 2nd start. I will start first time, and usually a second time but never a third. IT will try to start but want. Also usually after about 5-6 pulls rope gets hard to pull and was thinking the powerpack was going out and not giving any assist.

Start with a spark and compression test and go from there. Post your results.
