1998 Mercruiser 4.3L raw water cooled alpha drive 220 hours mostly freshwater use. Just changed from single piece to center discharge exhaust mainfolds as a preventative measure. I now notice on start up small amount of white smoke coming out at of discharge. Engine did not do this before manifold change. Also starboard riser is hot to the touch compared to port. I am concerned I have a small leak at the manifold to riser gasket that I cannot see externally.Does anyone have method to test for leaks at the riser/ manifold junction? Otherwise the engine runs fine and does not overheat, does not burn oil and there is no water visable in the oil.
Thanks

Welcome to iboats :) You need to do a pressure test, look in the 'search' function at the top of the page ....There is plenty on this in there....JK

Loosen and take out the bolts, and if the surfaces are clean, slip a new gasket in and see what happens. Make sure no kinks in the hose suppling water to that side

The "white" could simply be steam. Make sure you have the right gaskets on both risers. I believe there are two types, one for Raw and one for FWC. Also, double check that you have the hoses plumbed properly.

Re: Testing for manifold leak

Thanks guys I got it found the leak. Now which gasket four long slots or two long slots on the sides and two small round holes fore and aft that are currently fitted? Dealer where I got the gaskets says it doesnt matter. Also shop manuel says need to use Locktite 510 on gaskets again dealer says they put them in dry.
Thanks again

Most of the newer gaskets go on dry now. Hopefully your dealer has you set up with the proper gaskets.

Look at the ones that came off...I'd guess that they are the 4 way....No sealer is needed for the newer gaskets.....JK
