Testing Fuel Pump?

Is there any way to test the fuel pump on a Evinrude 115 Model# 115893E which has a very basic fuel pump. There are no wires or linkages that run to it. Just a couple fuel lines. I checked the screens for blockages and they are fine. The pump had fuel in it. I have never seen a pump like this before and am only familiar with pumps that are mechanical or electronic that are on heavy trucks and equipment.

You can remove the outlet fuel line that goes from the fuel pump to the carb(s) and turn over the motor to see if any fuel is pumping through it. It works via the crankcase vacuum/pressure pulses... So it is a totally mechanical type pump just different then what you're use to see and working on. But it uses the exact same principles to how it works...

Re: Testing Fuel Pump?

Thr preceding post is good advice for a rudementary test. If I may add to it, if you want a better test, temporarily tee a fuel pressure gage in pump outlet line and run the motor at various speeds. That will not only test the pump, but detect other problems such as clogged filters, air leaks, etc You probably are familiar with such gages, but they are cheap and usually combined with a vacuum gage. Teeing it into the line ahead of the pump will detect restrictions between there and the tank (as a vacuum test).

Thanks for the response. I'm going to test with a gauge as I'm confident the pump works as the motor runs. I just want to be sure it's working at it's optimum peak performance.
