Testing gauges

I am about to begin the rebuild of an older pontoon boat. I was planning on purchasing all new gauges for the rebuild. Now that I have purchased many of the supplies for the rebuild funds are a little tight so I am looking for advice. The origional gauges are still there with no apparent physical damage. The pontoon is a 1987 bass buggy. The engine is 1979 115hp Johnson V4 if that matters. The guages I have are a Tach, Volts, PSI and Speedo. Is there a way to test the gauges for functionality? I have a multimeter:) The tach works intermittently so I am not sure if rewiring the gauge will fix the problem or if the gauge is the problem. I don't see any readings on the other gauges. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Curt

Re: Testing gauges

The voltmeter will read the voltage of the battery in the same manner as your Multimeter.

The PSI Meter (OIL Pressure???) will read any pressure applied (Compressed Air?) Do Not Exceed the Max pressure.

The Speedometer also just reads Pressure.

For your Reference...
1.5 psi = 10 mph
2 psi = 12 mph <<< Typical pressure produced by a set of young health lungs.
6 psi = 20 mph
13 psi = 30 mph
23 psi = 40 mph
52 psi = 60 mph ... Notice that the scale is exponential; twice the speed gives 4 times the pressure.

The Tachometer is the only complicated meter you listed. It read frequency.
The details of the engine would be needed to determine the frequency needed.
A frequency generator in the 10 to 5000hz range would be needed. Read More Here.
