I have a 1988 25Hp Evinrude Manual Start Tiller...
When running it in a water tank in NEUTRAL and reving the engine, is it normal for the engine to backfire or cough? Only happens at higher rpm.
I'm not reving really high as I know you should not do this with no load on the engine...
I haven't put it on the lake to really try it yet...I'm trying to make sure everything that I can check before I put it on the lake is operating well....
Thanks In Advance.

springbok,

The short answer is yes, it's normal.

Revving it up, no load, is NOT good for it. I would not attempt to exceed 1/3 throttle, with no load.

If your engine is backfiring or coughing at increased rpms depending on whether it is actually backfiring or sneezing ,I would guess that you have a lean fuel/air mixture issue,or fouled carbs, or if outright backfiring may be due to failing or out of adjustment ignition component.

I wouldn't make too many judgements on the tune of an engine running in neutral other than that it is running. Put it in the water and put it in gear or use a test wheel. 2-strokes need a load on them.
