Testing overheat horn

Not sure if this is the correct area to post my problem but here goes. I replaced the motor on my pontoon last year from a 1989 force 50hp to a 1992 Johnson 60hp. I assumed the electrical was correct. Had my boat in a slip all year so it's kinda hard to do any work on it. Just brought the boat home a week ago and doing additional work/maintenance I couldn't do at the lake. One thing I wanted to do was test the overheat horn. I unplugged the bullet connector and grounded that, turned on the switch but nothing.
Can someone lead me down the path to getting this wired /rewired or splicing in the wire from the horn to the wires from the Johny so I know the horn will work if ,heaven help me, the engine might get hot.
Thankyou all in advance

Ground the tan at temp sensor with motor running. Buzzer should sound. If it does not isolate tan wire and ohm to look for an open. If no open check for 12v at purple wire at buzzer.

I test them while running so I can hear if there is any interference as in pulsing and such from the tach signal. This sometimes means a faulty buzzer. To each there own...mroe than one way to skin a ...

Overheat horn ??

I hate to ask again but when I asked the other day, 2 great fellas answered but for some reason, I couldn't open their responses?? Any I'll try it again . My motor is a 1992 'Johny,60hp. I lost the previous motor(1989 50hp,force)to overheat issues. The horn did go off but.....Anyway i know the horn works. I brought the pontoon home a couple weeks ago and have been doing maintenance work on it. Got the tach changed to a 6p, lubricating, etc. I have a manual on the motor and it tells me to unhook the tan wire(with a stripe) bulet connector coming out of the temperature sender and ground it with key on. Nothing! Anyway a couple days ago I pulled the cover off the console and right there is the tan wire, not sure there was a stripe on it, don't think so,anyway,it goes right into what I'm assuming is a factory horn.....black, round, about 2" in diameter, 3" long, and holes on the end. Am I checking it wrong or???? HELP, don't want to loose another motor!
Thankyou in advance ,especially the first 2 gentlemen that answered the first time, wish I could remember your names.

Find the tan wire where it goes into cylinder head. There is either a bullet connector or a blade style connector within a couple inches. Unhook it. Turn ignition to run position or just start the motor using muffs or a deep barrel. Ground the tan wire you just unhooked to cylinder head. The end of the wire going to the harness of course, not the little end hanging out of the head. Do you hear the alarm buzzer?

Also, when you first turn the key one click to the right the buzzer should beep. This is the self test feature that let's you know buzzer works.

Is there anyway I can check, what i'm positive is the Johnson horn?
was headed to the lake today after all this work but mother nature wouldn't allow it. I'll see if I can take a look tomarrow or next day. Dang, I really want this to work properly. It's very hard on me to try and get down in there to do any work under/in the console.

You might be a candidate for a temperature gauge -- easy wiring, surface temp sensor typically connects under one of the head bolts. If fairly mobile, might also carry an infrared temp gun on board. Keep a reasonably fresh impeller installed, and go boating.

Might not be a bad idea slthough i really do want this "beeper" to work! Ive had this motor for a year and i was told the impeller/water pump were redone prior to me buying it.????

Agree -- warning horn ought to work. Impeller? Gone both ways on that situation -- just depends on comfort level.

Got to thinking about that black round tube shaped thingy....perhaps that was low oil horn for when the VRO was still hooked up???? Maybe somehow I need to run wires from this over to the old warning horn????

Gonna need pic. No idea what you are talking about on this.

as far as no beep...is there 12v at the purple wire at buzzer?

Just uncovered the boat, I'll take a pic. It's a 3 wire setup, tan, purple, black. Anyway to check it right there under the helm?

Yes, the warning buzzer has three wires. Tan, purple and black. It works by having 12v on the purple. The tan grounds at various sensors to create a circuit giving you the warning. There is only one warning horn. It is either inside a side mount control or zip tied under a console with a binnacle style control.

Here's a pic...
well my file is too big.....anyway I'm positive it's the beeper. 2"or so round buy 3" or so long. 3 wires, tan, purple, black. Black goes to ignition switch, purple comes in then goes on to the ignition switch, tan goes to the beeper. This was the way things were wired on the harness/ignition switch. The ignition switch has an opaque type water, weather, type caulking material on the backside where the wires plug in.helps keep it waterproof and secure

Yes, ground one end of your test light. With key in run position touch the other to the purple wire. Does it light up?
