I finally found the parts I need to add electric start to my 1963 18HP Johnson. The parts came off a 1968 20 HP Evinrude. The starter and bracket mounted with no problem. I tried testing the solenoid before I mounted it. I connected a 12 volt battery to terminals C and D and hoped to hear a "CLICK".....nothing. Tried reversing the leads from the battery to C and D...again nothing. Am I right in assuming the solenoid is bad? And it appears to be a sealed unit meaning no repair, right?? One last question...I could leave the solenoid out of the wiring system by jumping around it by connecting A and B just to test the starter right? Thanks in advance for any help.

You are correct, ground one of the small posts and apply voltage to the other one and you should get a click. You can bypass the solenoid by applying battery voltage directly to the starter.
