I have a 1995 Mercury 40 HP with oil injection. Some time back I had the pizzo alarm go off with a steady tone, and an intermitted tone. I think the steady tone was for temp. and intermitted for oil injector. I put a new water pump in and cooling is fine. (steady cool pee) Since then I've mixed a little oil with the gas but want to know how to check the oil injector. I've only had the boat out for 2 short days since this happened. Motor runs well but don't want to double oil it if not necessary. I disabled the alarm. Driving me nuts. Any suggestions?

Using a felt tip pen or piece of tape, mark the current oil level in the engine mounted tank. Make sure you have a 50:1 mix of fuel/oil in the gas tank. Run the boat for a couple of hours -- doesn't need to be in one shot. If you've run the boat at 3/4 throttle or more for two - three hours you should have consumed about four gallons of fuel. Check the oil level in the oil tank. If the oil level has not changed, the injection system is NOT working. If the level has dropped, add oil to bring the level back up to the original mark. It should take about 1 pint of oil if the injection system was working. If that's the case, there is no need to add oil to the fuel as the injection system is working. The extra oil currently in the fuel will not hurt anything.
