Just brought my latest "baby" home. It's a 1986 50 hp Evinrude. The previous owner cut the tilt and trim cable about a foot from the motor. I want to check to see if the trim motor will work prior to a complete rewire. I have stripped the outer cable cover and exposed the three inner wires, (Black, Green, and Blue). I am assuming that the black wire is ground with the blue positive "up" and the green positive "down". Yes I have the factory manuals, but they give no color coded wiring diagrams. I just don't want to fry anything by arcing the wrong wires.

Black - Ground
Green - Down
Blue - Up

Remember green grass and blue skies......
Attach black to a good battery ground.
Apply +12VDC to green wire, motor runs in down direction.
Apply +12VDC to blue wire, motor runs in up direction.

Do you have the trim box that cable is supposed to run to?

Usually that trim box had a solenoid for up, but all current for down ran through the trim switch. If you're going to make your own box, I'd suggest two solenoids...

Re: Testing Tilt and Trim

Thanks Tx, I'll check my parts book tomorrow. I can't find it on-line. I'm going to jump the black to blue, then green and see if I need to proceed.

Bob

Also remember a 2 position Mom. On-Off-mom.On will replace the expensive trim switch and it can be mounted right on the side mt control or the dash.....If you really need a box, then I may be able to produce one.
Tim M
