Testing warning horn

My manual tells me to turn the key on and insert a key or thin piece of metal into a slot. The picture shows a slot above the key. All so looks like the fast idle must be raised. I can not find the slot when I look for it.<br /><br />The manual does not discuss replacing the thermostat. How many and where are they.<br /><br />Not sure what year the control box is. Everything else is a 1987 so I would think it is a 87<br /><br />1987 Evinrude 50 hp<br />Manual Johnson Evinrude Service Manual 35A thru 55 models<br /><br />Thanks for the help in advance

Turn on the key (U should hear a beep)<br />1. Leave the key on the on position <br />2. Get a wire and touch one end to good engine ground and the other to the harness side of the Temp sensor.<br /><br />you should have a steady beep <br /><br />if not check the horn by feeding 12v to Purple wire and ground to tan wire. If it beep when connected directly to power there might be somthing wrong with the harness or blocking diode.

Factory Service Manual will show the entire wiring diagram.

I have no beeps at all. I have the 1994 150 Fast Strike Johnson.

I have a 1988 Evinrude Johnson/Evinrude service manual, 40 thru 55 models. I saw the key test mentioned, and found the thermostat listed as part of "Powerhead Service", but never saw anything on servicing it. <br /><br />For my 48 SPL, if you look at the reassembly section, your'll see instructions on installing a new thermostat, spring, and cover. (#12 in my book). If you look at the fold out color diagrams in the back of the book under water circulation, you'll find what appears to be the thermostat - the large nut cap just above the top spark plug. Give it a look and see what you think...<br /><br />I'm interested in this as well, so I'll keep an eye out for more information.

By the way, at start-up my engine doesn't beep at all. I did recently suck up some lake weeds, so I know my overheat buzzer works fine.

It wasn't until the mid '90's that OMC came out with the "self-test" warning horn that would beep once when you turned the key on.<br /><br />An older motor will not beep when turning the key on unless the original horn has been replaced with the newer one and that the extra ground wire is connected.
