Testing without red plug harness

Just got a clean 1990 25hp Johnson tracker. TJ25ELESE. I started it manually with gas in carb and a rope and started right up. I have the controller but missing battery cables and red plug harness that goes to remote control. I want to start it with key to see what else she may need before I spend a lot of money. Those harnesses are not cheap, over 100+ for a decent one on eBay. I have the wiring diagram and wanting to run some wiring for testing. Was wondering if anyone has used or knows if I could get some female terminals to temporarily connect into the male plug on my motor? What size?

You could go to NAPA and look over their terminal selection and you might find something that will work.

possibility that the charging system will be adversely affected if run without a battery connection, but maybe OK. Check the wiring diagram. If the motor has a stand-alone rectifier, it can be replaced, and Radio Shack has been named as a cheap source in some of the forum listings here.

curious -- Did the seller keep the motor wiring (the red plug)? I have had a controller with a red plug for a number of years, with the idea that I would need it for a motor I might pick up at some point. Usually, the search is for a controller with a red plug, not the motor side of the harness. Maybe you can you salvage a motor harness from a local source (might be worth buying a parts motor).

Not sure what he did with it, I did call and asked if he had it and he just said he knew he didn't have it for sure. It does appear from the diagram that the rectifier goes thru the plug. If I do this, I would connect everything according to schematic and would only be for testing.

Re: Testing without red plug harness

The part I need is the plug from the remote, not the motor. I have been looking for one but can't afford the ones I've seen. The remote he gave me has the cable but not the wiring harness.
