Thank's Iboats members.. With some guidance I now have a "newish" 1986 alpha 1 out drive. New lower shift cable (adjusted correctly). New universal Joints. And new bellows all around.. and of course a new impeller to complete the minor rebuild. btw the lower seals were good and didnt need replacing. also sanded the drive for a new paint job..

Sounds like you're having fun!

Years ago (and I mean YEARS ago) the boat shop I worked at would always use zinc chromate spray on the lower units before the final Mercury black paint. I don't know if that is still being done...but I throw that in, just in case it is still a good idea. By the way--this was in Miami, and everything we ever saw was a salt water run unit.
