Looks like I got my Sunbird thread.
I have a 1990 Barletta 204 as pictured in my avatar.
Any other Sunbird owners please check in so we can swap knowledge.

I don't know why. Sunbird was bought by OMC in 1986 so it's not some "out there" brand. They are no Donzi, but I'm satisfied with the construction for what I paid.

You have a fine looking boat there. I plan on pulling my floor next year just to inspect and replace as its getting on 16 years old now.

When I bought mine the motor had an animal nest in the cowl from being parked in a barn 1998-2005. I have just a little fine tuning and troubleshooting left to get things tweaked.

Thanks for checking in, I was begining to think it was just me here.

Alden

Re: Thanks iboats!

I have a 1992 Sunbird Cosair 185 with a 4.3 OMC setup in it. I got it for a great price. It was on ebay and noone bid on it so I made an offer outside of ebay and the guy took it as he had to get it out of his yard. It nneded some work but it looked like it suffered more from non use than abuse. I'm working on it and hope to have it out and about shortly. I'll probably do it completly over within the next couple years. I've had many boats over the years as I like to buy project boats - fix them up and sell them (My other boat - the Bayliner will be up for sale shortly) and IMHO the Sunbird is a well built boat. Certainly not a top of the line but I have seen plenty of el cheapo boats over the years and this is not one of them.

Re: Thanks iboats!

I am glad to say that I am the proud owner of a 1991 Sunbird 190 Eurosport with a 92' 115 OMC quietrider outboard, which is basically a johnson or evinrude which ever way you look at it. This is our first boat, and it has been nothing short of an excellent boat for us. It looks it's age, some fade in the vinyl and dash, and some minor cracks in the upper hull, nowhere near the waterline (which I intend on patching up)but overall this boat is in great shape. I will post some pics when I get some.

I have a 1995 201 DC. I like mine just fine and it fishes better than a lot of boats that cost 20k +. The 115 Johnson could use an upgrade but it does well enough to get me out and back with a cooler full.

Re: Thanks iboats!

Does anyone know if the company just went out of business or if they were bought out by another company? Mine totally reminds me of a Grady White to be honest. I just stripped, primed and re-painted the bottom and it looks sweet! The boat is a 95 and is very clean for 10 years old. The Johnson Engine could use some work, but that's another story...Guess the Sunbird Neptune is dying breed?

Thanks Alden. I thought the same thing. As a matter of fact i was looking at a Hydrasports CC at the dealer i purchased my Sunbird through and he laughed and said somehting about Sunbird being taken over by Hydrasports. Never knew the other info. you posted though. Thanks for the response. So much for Sunbird having a poor reputation if Hydrasports was putting their name on a Sunbird boat :)

Cool link. I think I may start another thread and group as many sunbird history links as I can find. This may help others when searching for company history info.

Heres my baby! Had it out on the lake all summer - not too bad for a 2 weekend engine replcament due to the cracked block it came with!

Re: Thanks iboats!

Thanks Alden! It would make me even happier if I could find more info on one of the nicest lined boats from a time when boats were boats and women were treated as such.
Alright ... that went a bit tooo far. I came Across this Corsica 175 a couple of months back. Loved the lines, felt the 2.3 cobra would be underpowered, knew that I was in for more sweat than anyone else(that had looked at it). But the lines.... a 17 ft medium deep v bowrider with a raked windshield that sets back into the thick gunwhale and then the back into the ample beam. There has to more of these boats still out there!
I have always been a fan of the Wellcraft Novas, the Liberators... loved the lines. Haven't seen one in these parts for a decent price. I could not have bought the trailer for what I paid for everything. So. I'm in!
I have been "creepin" on the forums for some time now. The other day I was blowing through the restoration forum and could not believe the amount of knowledge available here! A site that doesn't discriminate about how long you are, your income level and the level at which your ability to be handy is. Any help, criticism or info that you may give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Show me your Sunbirds!!

Re: Thanks iboats!

we are the proud owners of a 1998 17' bow rider that we bought new.it has been a very good boat. only used on a small lake in maine.90hp evenrude does well. our kids learned to ski and tube on it over the years. the reason we bought a sunbird, was the $ and the fact that omc owned it at the time. ower choice was a bayliner or sunbird. so we feel we made a good choice

Re: Thanks iboats!

It's great to know that there are more Sunbird fans out there. I bought my 89 Corsica 185 in August 09. Only three trips to the lake after that, but loved every minute. A few minor mechanical issues encountered but a great ride and so far dependable. Great assessment from marine mechanic when taken in for winterization.....water pump replaced, shifting rod straightened but other than that good to go! I was prepared for horrible news. For my first boat I think I got a great deal. It's really hard to wait for warm weather to arrive. I will add that I don't enjoy upholstery work and that project seems to be ongoing. Best wishes to all fellow Sunbird enthusiasts.
