I know we say thanks after a question gets answered, however I want to thank everyone on the help of getting my '78 90hp Tower going!!!

A little back ground is, this is the motor that powered the boat for my mom and dads first date. He bought it new with the skeeter in '78. After giving it to me in high school, and running it for a few years the transom was about to fall completely off. Soooo it sat for about 7 years. Then I got a boat without a motor and thought the ol merc would be perfect. After putting it on and taking it out 2 times the distributor and a few other things went out. So it sat for a few more years. Until I moved away from home for work and with not distractions worked on it on the weekends.

It ran perfect and hasn't run like that for 12 years. I'm going to have my prop reworked it has some chips and things, but at 4600rpm I was running 34mph which is prety good on my heavy boat.

When I brought it home, it almost brought a tear to my dads eye. He told me he was afraid it would never run again.. That's what it's all about!!!!!!

SO THANKS AGAIN !!!!!
I might restore the skeeter and put the motor back on it for his retirement...ha ha that should be fun.

Cut the top off, gut it to the shell, replace all the wood, only do it right this time (Soak all the parts in Rot-Doctor CPES multiple times. Put the top back on, glass it in place, polish up the gel-coat, do a little upholstery, and have a new boat.

The new ones are nice, but for a grand in parts, some sweat and itch, and time, of course, you can resurrect an old one, have a very nice boat, and keep most of your money.

Yeah, I've been doing a little research. I have a '78 20hp that I will probably be working on. It goes on a wood boat that my grandpa built. So that might be my next project.

I totaly understand about restoring old stuff. People always ask on here if it's worth restoring an old motor. I changed everything on that 90 except opening the block. It runs like a champ and hopefully will be around for another 33 years. Everything cost under $1000. Look at that price then go price a new one. Ha Ha
