Thanksgiving Dinner Turns into Neighbor's Nightmare

11/23/06

LONG NECK- A Delaware family's Thanksgiving dinner is rocked by an explosion. Family members say they left a deep fryer unattended outside, and in just minutes a home went up in flames. The twist is, it was not their home; it was the home next door. The car port burned to the ground. The house itself was also damaged.

The man who lives next door admits responsibility. He says he was planning to deep-fry a turkey outside. He says he left the fryer outside to warm up. The next thing he knew, his family heard an explosion, looked out the window, and saw their neighbor's house in flames.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating exactly what happened.

There was no one inside of the house. Neighbors say it is a vacation home for an out of town family.

And the moral is:

Don't use the deep fryer on your neighbors car port! YIKES!

When will people learn those things can be dangerous if not used properly!

Yeah, every year lots of peoples burned up their houses or garages or cars and all kind of stuff. Wouldn't it work and safer if you use a deep fryer like one use in restaurant?

I know a few fire fighters and this time of the year is an aggravation for them. It seems this sort of thing is way too common. The best place to **** the bird is out in the yard. If you have snow, clear an area. Also, never leave it unattended. Another thing is to make sure the turkey is completely thawed and most if not all the water in the bird is drained. Problem is people dumping a frozen bird into the fryer. We all now how water behaves in hot oil. It bubbles up, over flows out of the pot and hits the fire. Not good! Suppose to lower the bird in nice and slow. A large wooden coat hanger works great.
