Dan - Not much you can do at this point. I would drain every drop of fuel from the tank, lines and carbs. Squirt aome oil into the combustion chambers and turn by hand. Add fresh fuel mix (50:1 TWC3 oil) and fire it up. You might want to do a compression check after you run it also. Let us know.

If you used automotive oil to run the engine for a very short time, it should be okay. Outboard manufactures alow this for EMERGENCY purposes. The older the outboard, the more able they are to run for a short duration on automotive oil.

My dad bought a 1956 Johnson 5.5 (I believe) from a guy that rebuilt old and antique motors. He said to use SAE 30 for the motor and not 2-cycle oil, I think at 25:1 (maybe it's his way of ensuring repeat business?). This motor ran flawlessly for the 3 or 4 years my dad had it.

Thats rite 30 weight oil, should be straight mineral oil (not detergent but excusable if it is..) I know lots of people (years ago..60's ) that did this with no "apparent" ill effects. But again...EMERGENCY use on newer engines.

Flyboy; there is no manufacture in the world that would advise a person to use auto oil in a two-strok engine. Not sure where your getting your info. I guess if the person was stuck on a island and all he had was 4-stroke oil.

Outboard 2-stroke oil wasn't even developed before the 50's, so they all were running straight weight motor oil before that. It would do in a pinch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, doesn't 2-cycle oil stay mixed with the gas whereby 4-cycle oil separates from the gas????

All motor oil is required by law to mix with gas.

Quote from a 1957 Johnson rde/rdel manual.<br />"We recommend using a reputable outboard motor oil or SAE 30 grade automotive engine oil(not heavy duty)"<br />You may have fouled up your injectors a bit but nothing some properly mixed fuel and carburator cleaner mixed in with your fuel can't take care of.

Re: the 1st oner may have used auto oil

I'll try to put my prior pump-jockey skills to work here.<br /><br />The key for using 30WT in 2-strokes, is that is needs to be NON-DETERGENT, unlike most multi-grade engine oils are today.<br /><br />I believe detergents had too good of cleaning effect when burned, thus possibly increasing wear that the oil was supposed to reduce.<br /><br />In the 50's , there was not much (if any) detergent oils available, so it was probably not referred to much, concerning outboard premix.<br /><br />I would suggest filling the tank with good premix and go boating. If it has not fried in 16 years, it is probably fine.
