Well I had to do it,workin on her was like tryin to kick a hole in cement with a bare foot.I took her to the DR.'s office, they said I did all the work that they would normally do so it would be an easy bill for me. I hated to do it,I don't like defeat too well, but I can't seem to understand why it's not wanting to even run anymore. I pulled on it about 100 times today with no avail,so I took her in for a check-up.They seem to think I should have it back on Saturday.I will definately inform anyone who cares what was wrong with it.
As for the '55 Evinrude she's BEAUTIFUL:D !!!!

Never pull a Johnson rope 100 times. If it isn't running in 5 max, stop and see what's wrong with it. No point in adding a worn out starter to the problem list.

I was thinking worn out shoulder.

Sorry to hear the bad news. After getting a $120 bill to rebuild a carb on my first outboard I vowed to learn how to fix everything on it. Unfortunately, that sort of goal also ends with you owning three dozen outboards you "can't do without" and an endless revolving door of trades and repairs for friends. I remember when summer was about fishing and boating not just testing motors that like to show you a new problem once you get the first problem fixed.
