I have a 2008 Mercury 4-stroke 9.9 sitting on the back of my 12' jonboat. The motor has excellent manners and it's not missed a beat since I've owned it.
Just for s__ts and giggles we put a 90's 9.9 Nissan 2-stroke on my boat the other day and it absolutely rocked. While the Merc struggles to plane out 2 large adults, the Nissan jumped out of the hole and would have smoked the Merc in top speed.
The question I have is how can these 2 motors both be rated 9.9HP when there is such an obvious difference in HP?
The old Nissan runs great too but it's a heavy beast and it has none of the good manners that the newer motor has. All this aside, I'd gladly keep the Merc for my uses because it is so light, smooth, smoke-free, non-stinky, and refined.
Is there any way to milk any more performance out of the Merc? I doubt carbs can be swapped because the 15HP block is much larger. Steeper prop? hmmmm
