The agony of neglect...

How many motors have been layed to waste b/c previous owners left them out behind the shed?

Anyway, I bought a 1972 6HP Johnson on Friday for $50. Owner said "ran great three years ago when I put it in storage...."
Heard that one before?

Upon inspection, it was locked up tighter than a gnat's ***. Surface corrosion most everywhere. I talked him down to $50 and bought it anyway since I needed a cowl for my 1970 6hp and I figured the prop was decent. I even thought hey maybe I'll un-sieze it, get it running and sell for a profit. (my time is evening tinker time and not worth $)

Well first I pulled the head. Yikes! Cyliders rusted horribly. OK, maybe .030" overbore could clean that up and still make me profit.

Next carb and intake off. Yikes! reeds all corroded.

Then split case. Yikes! crank rust fused to con rods.

So now we're talking new crank and bearings and .030" over pistons/rings. No profit left as this motor would only sell for $400 at most. Oh well. I removed the lower and snapped all four screws on the water pump housing in the process. Yikes. Water pump completely trashed and loaded with salt and sediment.

That was the nail in the coffin. Does it look like this may have been submerged?

The cowl is in good shape and I can part out the carb, recoil, flywheel, driveshaft, lower gears, shift, prop shaft, transom clamps and mag plate on eBay so I should end up with a free cowl, a spare prop and some $ in pocket.

"Ran fine when I put it storage" my ***!

Anyone here unsieze an engine and have it last reliably? I would worry that any rust on the crank would kill the rods in short order.

Oh well, time for eBay....

I don't know what you could possibly sell on Ebay. You bought a $50 paperweight.

that's a heck of an "autopsy"...least you got what you really wanted in the cowl...great "reveal" for those buying seized engines that "ran right before I put it in storage 2 years ago"

That is the problem with buying a seized outboard until you disassemble it you have no way of knowing what you have purchased. On the other hand you have some spare parts for your six if you don't sell them.

Yes, submerged...that was my first thought. Definitely only for parts. There are better motors out there running for only a little more.

That lower unit may be useable. How does the oil look in it? As for the rest? Nahhh. It looks like it was submerged 3 years ago when it was last ran and put into storage. :D

Submerged is my vote as well. But why did they not run it to dry it out properly?!

Well, the good news is that the carb is fine and the lower is fine. The oil that came out was dry and looked mostly fresh. The gears are good as well as the driveshaft, propshaft, shift lever and shafts.

The flywheel and magneto plate are fine - coils/points/condensors are original though but only have light surface rusting on coils and the steel magnet face.

So, the prop and cowl were worth my investment. I'll keep some of the other parts as spares and part out the rest. Was fun to tear apart though. Like CSI kinda.

lol, kinda like CSI, but the po was somewhat honest! it probably did run great before it was put into storage......shortly after it went for a swim! (how can people sell stuff, without fully telling the story? ....i couldnt)

Thats because we have too many people out there who have no business on the water, sorry to say, but thats why we're here.

It might be worth while to get a new powerhead and make it run again.
