all biases aside, who knows what the best engine is? or the fastest?
if you had only one boat, which outboard would be the best?

Re: The best engine

yeah I just watched a video of an evinrude e-tec 225 and it basically destroyed the mercury 225 4 stroke and the yamaha. but I was wondering if mercury's 300 or something else would be better than something evinrude has to offer

Re: The best engine

What category are we talking here? Purchase Price, Reliability Record, Top Speed, Looking, Sounding, Holeshot, Miles per Gallon, Resale Value, Power to Weight Ratio, Noise Level, Service Network, Consumer Satisfaction, Customer Service, Customer Loyalty, Parts Availability, Exhaust Emissions, Ability to Idle for Extended Periods, Smelling, Longevity, Quality Construction, Advertising Hyperbole, Company Reputation, Boat Manufacturer Affiliations.
We all want different combinations of attributes from our engines and all engines have their strengths and weaknesses. The best way to compare top speed and fuel efficiency is to compare manufacturer's performance reports, (available on their respective websites), on the same hull. You might be surprised.

Also cant compare the E-tec to 4-strokes. If you put an E-tec 225,150,90,etc next to a mercury 2-stroke of the same horse they are very comparable. Have to say though that E-tec has hurt their integrety by trying to put their motor above all the others by testing them with the 4-strokers:rolleyes:

they are all good motors, you have to find the one that fits the situation, you are going to use it for.

Nah, He's not trolling. He's just recently come down with the bug. Keep asking questions 112. The experience here at iboats will usually steer you in the right direction.

Re: The best engine

The best outboard engine ever built was the little 3-4.5HP JohnnyRude that began as the Johnson JW in 1952 and was still in production until recently, over 50 years, with regular improvements and upgrades.

JB,
You must be right because I've heard many times how good those 3's are. I've tried to find myself one but they are so darned expensive, plus I don't really need one(I know, that hasn't stopped me before). It is hard to believe that they can hold their value so well, i.e. ebay prices over 225 for a crappy one. They must be awesome motors. Of course, I think I may be an "engine worshipper".:D

Zieman i'm just a kid who's looking to get into boating. I'm trying to get loaded up with information before I buy a used boat. I wouldn't want to be ignorant about it and end up with a piece of junk. :)

Best engine is the one that starts when you turn the key and choke and does not stop till you turn it off. Could be one of many out there. I perfer one with carbs. FRED

The best engine is the always the one that you purchased because you believed the last person who told you it was the best one...
