I've done mostly fresh water fishing in my life.

Will be retired in Bradenton, Florida within 10 months and doing a lot of fishing on my new boat (2005 Proline CC with 115 Merc OB)

Being new to salt water fishing - what does everyone use for equipment (rod and reels??)

I know if does depend on what type of fish your after, and whether trolling or casting.......

I plan to do some inshore fishing (probably mostly), but also plan on some off shore around some of the wrecks and reefs in the Gulf.....

what are some good (reasonably priced) outfits that I should be looking at??

Thanks

This is what I just got. Not the best, but at very reasonable price...

Hey Rick...good to hear from you. Gettin a little antsy about the move?? :D

So, you can get Avet's and some Diawas for really big money. Mostly used by those that have a few bucks to throw away. Me, I have been a Penn and Shimano man for a while now. Penn 4400, 4500, 650 750 for spinning; 112, 113 for conventional. Or Shimano Spheros 4000 for spinning and their TLD series for conventional and you should be about covered. I will PM you about some gear that I have. Take care and make sure to keep that short timers calendar up to date!! :D

Re: The best rod and reels?

once again I second what rick says, those are good, affordable reels, perfect for your needs. A 40 series reel will do everything you need, put it on a med, med/hvy 7" rod and you'll have a nice combo. I would probably stick with mono for a while instead of braid and learn to tie leaders, you'll need to use them. Probably on of my favorite cheap-er combos is a Quantum Boca 40 on a St Croix Tidemaster rod.

Re: The best rod and reels?

In my personal opinion, being from Florida, I'd go with some Abu Garcia/Shimano reels on an Ugly Stick or Garcia rod for inshore, 14-20lb class. I've used them for years in the saltwater, and as long as you give them a good rinse with clean water afterwards, they should last a long time. As far as offshore, for bigger fish (grouper, snapper, heck even marlin) I'd go with a Penn Senator 113 or 114 H models, bigger spool on a stout broomstick sized Penn Slammer or if you can find one, a Daiwa Beefstick. I don't even know if they make those anymore, but I have one, and I think I could pull the cork out of the bottom with that thing. For the in between stuff, just shop smart for something that is a good quality name brand that fits your price range. Daiwa, Shimano, Penn, Accurate, Abu Garcia, Okuma, etc... All of these are great brands and make great products, just some of their products cost more than others. Congrats on the retirement by the way!
