Hello

I was wondering when buying 2 batteries is it best to have 1 starter and 1 deep cycle,
or 2 deep cycle's.
I was told one of each. What is your opinion??

Now, without all the technical stuff, :(
Can I start my engine with switch in #1 position, then once started, switch to #2 or Both position for the accessories?? Switch has AFD.
Battery 1 would be only hooked up for starting,
Battery 2 would be all the 12V accessories. Lights, VHF etc...... I don't have much.

Also, how is a Ammeter hooked up when 2 batteries are involved?
I appreciate all your opinions. It can get abit confusing at times.

Thanks alot

without getting technical, I would go with 2 starting batteries if you have minimal accessories and no troller. The ammeter should be connected between the alternator/accessory junction and the battery common terminal on the selector switch..... :)

Re: The big Battery question.....

Do Not switch the battery switch while the engine is running.

The engine must stay in constant connection with the battery while running, or you will have electrical troubles down the road (river).

Boat of Us
I like one Starting and one deep cycle. Advantage of deep cycle is can discharge farther with out damage. Starting battery do not like deep discharges. You can go with two deep cycle batteries if you do not have a big V8 engine that requires a high starting current. Even with a big V8 can use deep cycle but will likely need very large battery, group 29 or 31.

With the AFD should be safe to turn switch with motor at idle. I personaly never turn switch unless I have a dead starting battery. I use a battery isolator to charge both batteries. Not sure what type motor you have but one thing to think about is if have a big discharged deep cycle and a outboard with low amps out (6 amps) then it is very hard on charger to run at max output to try and charge a big deep cycle.

Sorry if too technical.
