My friend has what in my opinion is the worst outboard ever built and has convinced me to fix it for him. So after breaking many bolts and spending a lot of time with vice grips and oxy acetylene I manged to remove the siezed leg. The only problem is that the water pipe came out with the leg and it looks like theres no easy way to get it back in. After much trying and swearing I'm here for some advice...anyone....
Thanks,
Eric

You've obviously never encountered a Mercury Gnat.

Off with it's head! check out:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=015489

All outboards are bad if they've been in salt water. Have a look at the exhaust "doughnut" gasket while it's apart. Now would be the time to change it if it's getting bad.

EDIT: Slightly better news, check out Joe Reeves post:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=029885

Unless it is melted from heat, or fallen apart from age . The water tube should slip right up into the rubber grommet in the exhaust leg. Check the motor mounts on this engine to see if they are broke, or very loose. My guess is that you will be a long way from done with just a water pump. I share your opinion about this engine. OMC deserved to go broke just for making that thing. Befor anyone flames me for this statement, take one totally apart.

i have taken about 20 or more of them apart and have 4 of them myself they really are simple little motors. i would not trade them for anything. yaa they have there problems but what outboard dont. its not the outboards fault that it was put into saltwater and not taken care of the right way.the equipment is only as good as the operator. the water tube will go back in. if it came out it will go back in without taking apart the motor. u just have to have the angle right and time to play with it.

I'm a Merc guy, so I know a bad motor when I see one. I work with them all day. :p

lucky for me they all corroded away in my area. no white or red mercs, no scots or elgins no gnats :) . but to properly replace the tube in the grommet on the 9.5 ya have to remove the power head. be aware that most the cowl and motor mounts are NLA. another reason I wont touch anything past about 1980. its not worth the time to deal with the corrosion.

go to the links above it can be done without removing the powerhead. i have only taken the powerhead off one time to replace the tube and thats before i knew it could be done without all that work. lube the tube and get a good flash light i have and optical light that goes all the way in there to shine some light on the matter but it can be done with a good mag light
