We were out early spring fishing with friends & family on my pontoon boat. My wife had picked up a small fish net for our 4 year old to help haul in some fish. She wandered around most of the day getting bait for people and occasionally tending her fishing pole.
The front of my pontoon has a deck that is outside the railing, nice for using as a swim platform/sitting on etc. My 4 year old daughter was dipping the net into the water the all of a sudden says "uh-oh!" Needless to say she let go of the handle and it plunged down into the water. My solution was to just buy another one but she did the sad face thing and my wife decides she could just jump in and get it. She asks one of the people with us how deep the water is and they take a look at the depth finder. She replies it says "5 feet", now normally when my wife or I ask each other how deep the finder is reading we will add another foot or so to the measurement because the transducer is mounted to the transom. We were pretty close to the shore and my wife deduced that the water couldn't be much over 3 feet deep considering how close we were and the reading on the depth finder.
Now this is EARLY spring, the average temp probably wasn't over 70-75 during the day and the water is still cold. (The fish finder has a temp reading too, I think it was 59 degrees.) So my wife has decided that shes going to just step down into the water and pick up the net with her toes.
Off she goes except its quite a bit deeper than the three feet she anticipated its more like 5 feet deep as she can barely touch the bottom and the 59 degree water is up to her neck!
She wasn't a bit happy as we helped her and the net back onto the boat, but the 4 year old loved the whole ordeal!
