Maybe the next time you go, make a big show of you getting ready, showing him stuff he likely remembers from this boat trip, but with no sign that he will be accompanying you (him being supervised by someone else ready to look after him). Ideally, let him watch you drive away, or at least start to. That could just be the ticket to get him to make a fuss about going with you. Just a thought.
