One of the biggest things affecting salt water fishing, and soon to be fresh water fishing, are MLPAs. That is marine life protection areas. These are something that we need to discuss. I don't know how to even breach this subject without being political.

I agree. I have a lot to say about this, but I will just follow this thread. My feelings toward Government getting involved in every aspect of our lives is well known.

Re: The need for political posts

This is not the site for it. The popularity of iboats is a victim of its own success. Sometimes a simple topic that involves politics can be spun into a heated argument. Lots of crazy and opinionated people on the internet and it is easier to voice your opinion, when you are not looking at the other person. Also, there are limited mods to make sure every post stays with in the rules, it is easier to make a blanket ban, then try to moderate the shades of grey that can erupt.

The best thing I can suggest is go find a site/forum that allows the topics you are seeking. Other than that getting help in boating in general is great in this site.

I wouldn't be surprised if this thread gets locked.

thurps, your area and mine are simular in a way that the fisheries must remain healthy in order for economies to survive.....at least my wallet does. I do my own protection of the oceans by practicing catch and release. Don't get me wrong, we like to bring home a dolphin, tuna, or a wahoo for the table. We target billfish, which we release hopefully unharmed. Protection Areas are a great thing for me......On the other hand, If a persons wallet depends on their catch of keepers, then I would think they have another opinion.

Those who have been here long enough to remember when political threads dominated Dockside Chat remember that almost all of them soon devolved into name-calling and insult-hurling. Many of them started out in that vein.

There may be a forum out there where political threads are conducted in a civilized manner, but I have yet to find it.

You guys are going to get this thread closed because you keep bringing up the political side that's not even present at the moment. Look at Sasto's reply, had nothing to do with politics. Stop trying to bring it down a road it's not going...

Unfortunately the thread's TITLE disagrees with you....

You want to see big " G " involvement in fisheries, look at Masssachusetts. Big investigation now on going, high ranking officials replaced, FBI now investigating NOAA.

I am pleased that we don't have political threads with all of the bashing and hurled insults. This forum is now a better place, there are countless of forums online that cater to those that seek arguments and debate.

In order to keep this thread from being locked you'll need to focus on policies (laws) and procedures (catch and release, limits ect.) you believe would insure healthy balance. All while still allowing for recreational and commercial fishing activities. And stay away from the who's responsible, implementation and regulation aspects of the issue.

Re: The need for political posts

The primary purpose of this site, is to promote iboats' sales activities. This is done by providing a place were people can discuss and exchange information pertaining to various boat projects and related issues, while introducing them to a business that can supply needed items for those projects.

While there are some forum sections that have to do with other things, it was decided some time ago, that discussions involving controversial subjects, are not in the best interests of that goal, nor are they to the liking of most of the forums' participants.

It would be very nice to discuss the issue you bring up .... if the discussions remained civil. The problem, however, is that experience has shown that to be unlikely. Unfortunately, there are a few folks around here, who insist on turning relatively benign discussions into a flame war.

It's extremely easy.
1) Conduct a meaningful discussion about what the best options would be for the administration of these MLPAs....then...
2) get active politically to try and accomplish it.

Item 1) could be very possible to do in the Fishing forums here, and IMO quite appropriate as a topic.
Item 2) not only wouldn't fly in here, it wouldn't be the best venue in any event.

Re: The need for political posts

Not to upset anyone but when a post gets too hot for me, I just click out and go on to another one. What ever goes on in that thread can't bother me if I don't go there. I understand the reason for banning political posts. I don't necessarily agree with it because any opinion can be controversial. I have always viewed Dock Side Chat as just that. Things that you would discuss at the dock side. Sorry to say, politics is a biggie there. Around here anyway. I respect the rule though foremost that is the right thing to do.
