I need to change the lower case oil in this but some engineer somewhere decided to bury the drain plug behind the prop which requires removal of both props.
I have been told that i should heat the prop to get it to release from spline need a second opinion will this cause damage to anything if I apply heat to remove it?
Is there a special tool required to remove the rear propellor on a 1996 volvo penta DP-S. The outer prop came off easily the nut holding the rear prop came off without much difficulty but the prop is stuck firmly.
Boat is a 1996 Harris Flote Dek, 23' 11" 5.8 Volvo Penta (Ford) engine, dual props are Stainless F5

Thanks but after many epletives and a busted knuckle I have discovered a way to fix the problem I removed the entire lower unit and will take it to the Volvo Penta dealer tomorrow, Thanks anyway.;)

In this case you may be better off In the I/O forum I'm certainly not the guy to try to help on a dual prop setup.
Heat could easily damage the hub though sometimes it is the only alternative.
Speaking generically;try something like pbblaster or liquid wrench.Being as specific as the Volvo setup is try the I/O forum before going too far.

Pretty smart move by that engineer. That way you'll grease the prop splines for easy removal at least once every year when you change the outdrive oil.

Uhhhhh ...........................exactly how long has it been since the drive oil was changed or checked for water?????

Ayuh,... Exactly,....
Blaming the Design on your Lack of Maintance is pretty lame....

You may need Heat,... You may need a Prop Puller,...
You may have to Destroy the prop to get it Off,...

very good advice however since I purchased the boat last year and this is the first year it has been out of the water in the last 7 I am sure I will find a lot of evidence of lack of maint. That doesnt explain away a lousy design are'nt you glad you do not have to remove your transmission to drain the engine oil in your car?

I doubt very strongly that that is the reason this was designed this way, Mostly because they appear to have only produced this particular feature on their outdrives on a couple models for one or two production years.

7 Years since it was out of the water ! WOW

I would not heat it up you will probaly melt the prop shaft seal. I would find a prop puller.

I'm still floored over the 7 year thing, you could have 7 years of rusty water in there. I would ASSume it is salt water no less.

Pic's please I would like to see this.

I don't consider removing my dual props the equivelant of removing a transmission from a car. More along the lines of having to jack your car up so you can remove the oil filter. Don't have to do that on all cars, just the vast majority of them.

I am quite surprised too. It was in salt water until 2002 then previous owner brought it to Cincinnati put in Ohio River where it remained till last year when I purchased it, (very cheaply) w/o trailer, had trailer made for it took it out of water last September did several weeks cleaning, amazingly bottom was in good condition after removing all the barnacles out drive was so encrusted had to pressure wash 3 times then rent a steam washer to get the gunk off. Lower case oil was black black had outdrive off to replace exhaust bellows decided to change oil and grease up shafts when this problem but as I have said I am passing this problem to the local dealer of Harris Flote Dek / Volvo Penta.
You are Quite correct I tried heat at the advice of a local repair person who works for a Volvo Penta dealer, and it did melt the shaft seal just a little more to replace.
Thanks

Well guess thats why we all have opinions it seems user friendly apparently has a different meaning to you than it does to me.
Of course if all mechanical equiptment is sold only to expert repair persons like you seem to be this wouldnt make a difference.

Your problems with this design started 5 or 6 years before you bought this thing, and you want the wrong people arrested. I do not normally respond to these type of threads but you put it out there and presented it as bad design when it is not.

I can take my dual props off in 3 or 4 minutes, maybe less. It should not be that much of an issue to get the props off, so having the drain there is not that much out of line as far as engineering. It is a protected place, some may consider that a plus.
