The plan for CBBT on Saturday

Very new to the bay so this is the plan for Saturday and I was hoping for some input from those with more experience:

? It?s a 2+ hour run for me to get into Lynnhaven. I?ll get there just after 8am. I want to make to the north island to work the end of the flood tide by throwing some storm shad around the rocks, drifting as I can Perhaps move over to the south island at some point.
? Then I?m going to troll bay side of the bridge with a couple of Stretch 25+ lures on each side of the boat. My boat is only 19? and I have one rod holder on each side.
? If no action I plan to put out two umbrella rigs, one on each side, perhaps make it out on the other side of the bridge through the tube at the 3rd and 4th islands (weather and wind permitting).

If never fished with an umbrella rig so any input or hints on those would be appreciated. The weight on the center hub seems heavy enough to me so that with 75' or so out I should get the enough depth. I?ll have them on a Penn 330 reel with 30 lb test and 4? wire leader. I?m a bit concerned that 30 lb test is lite. Any suggestions or input on what else to try?

Re: The plan for CBBT on Saturday

It supposed to blow out of the S at 20 knots on Saturday. Throw in the heavy tides down there and it's going to be a little "sporty" 19 footer. Be careful out there

I've never seen an umbrella rig that was heavy enough to use without additional weight unless you're fishing them very close to the surface.

I fish them 2 ways depending on which way I have the rods setup. You can either attach the weight directly to the front of the umbrella or you can use an inline sinker and run your normal mono leader between the umbrella and your terminal tackle. My personal preference is to attach the weight directly to the front of the umbrella. You get less ?blow back? that way.

My umbrella rods all have 80# Power Pro with a 20? top shot of #80 mono spliced to the braid using a double uni-knot. A lot of guys run braid all the way to the snap but I don?t like handling braid bare handed at the back of the boat and thus the mono top shot.

I?ve run umbrellas using #30 mono in the past put IMHO you?re pressing your luck. The mono setups I press into umbrella action from time to time both have #50 mono on them.

Re: The plan for CBBT on Saturday

My plan for Saturday was based on Tuesday's weather forcast. Looking again today does show things have changed. I'm not likely to drive 2 hours and put in with the current forcast. No desire to be a statistic.

Great feeback on the umbrella rigs. I'd dearly love to get with a few old salts on day like Saturday when it'll be unpleasent to be on the water. I'd like to learn a bit more about how to tie/rig different lures for the bay. Do you know of any clubs that meet around Richmond or the surrounding area?

I may wind up at the Ocean view pier on Saturday, in rain gear with a rod hanging over the railing.

In Md. we have the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen?s Association (MSSA) with local chapters spread through out the State.

I would imagine that Virginia would have a similar organization.

Thank you. I put 80 lb Power Pro on my Penn 330's today and added a 15' 80lb test mono leader on the umbrella rigs. Hard getting used to tying knots in that big line.

I found the Central Virginia Sport Fishing club that meets once a month. I'm sure they'll be able to teach me a few things.

I assume you didn't make it out today given the weather conditions (?).
I'm further up the Bay, If I get a chance I might pop out for a bit tomorrow.
I picked up a couple #17 Tony's to try.

No, much as I wanted to get out the winds were just too high for my little boat. But I did spend time in the tackle shop having two reels retied and spending $150 on other stuff. <grin>

But next weekend those stripers better be on their guard.
