I just called the Mercury Tech in the resort town I'm visiting.

Me: Is there anything that can be done about a slipping throttle?
Tech: Nope.
Me: You mean I just have to buy a replacement?
Tech: Nope. It's supposed to slip. Safety feature.
Me: Huh?
Tech: Keeps you at the helm; not movin' around the boat when you're at high speed.
Me: It's not supposed to be a cruise control, huh?
Tech: You got it.

Does this sound right?

This does make pulling a tube difficult. It's hard to do a sharp turn with just my left hand. And really hard to cut one direction/then the other!
