The usual fuel/oil ratio dilemma...

I recently bought a boat that has a 1974 115HP Johnson O/B installed. The previous owner tells me he used one quart oil for every 6 gallons. According to my Clymer Shop Manual, I should be using one pint to every 6 gallons. I read about a gazillion previous topics referring to fuel/oil mixture and now I'm more confused than ever. I'm leaning toward using the one quart, since the engine must be accustom to running with that particular mixture. It seems to me that in this case "more is better" since obviously there's more oil to lube the engine. Any comments?

Just 1 pint per 6 gallons (50/1) is fine.

I'd buy some carbon-remover ("powertune") and run it through there. The former owner was using too much oil & may have gummed up the rings.

16oz/6 gal is aprox 50:1, which is the correct ratio to your motor. I suspect your previous owner was using the right ratio; he just got his terms mixed up.

Funny thing is the previous owner gave me the spark plugs he removed from last year...clean as a whistle. Whether he spend a little time "cleaning" them before showing them to me is debatable, I guess.

At least with the 1 quart to 6 gal mix, your wife could find you where ever you were on the lake! and mesquitoes wouldnt be a problem for awhile after you stopped! :D

If he was running a quart of oil for 6 gallons then that's like 25:1. I agree with Lee that he probably meant a pint, or else he would have run into trouble throughout the years running 25:1. I would decarb it just to be on the safe side, can't hurt. Good luck.

All this is good advise assuming you are going to use a good quality TCW-3 oil.
