So I understand how this pump works now. I have a 1989ish Johnson 60HP. It has the VRO, however when I bought the boat, the VRO was disconnected. The fuel pump on the pump works. I have no idea if the VRO was unplugged because it no longer worked or if someone just didnt want to have to open the cowling up each time to add oil.

If anyone else has read my threads lately, they would know I have been diagnosing a problem with idling nicely, being in neutral, and getting in and out of gear without the motor quitting. Understanding now how the VRO pump works...would it make sense for my motor to not idle well and want to stay running at very low rpms because of the fact that its getting 50:1 oil/gas all the time..rather than running how the engine probably was designed to run with the pump putting in the amount of oil needed for how the engine was currently running. Any input?

Anyone know how much a new VRO pump costs for a late 80's early 90's 60HP Johnson? Any input would be great guys.

Re: The VRO Pump

i run premix in all my motors, rather than the vro. there should be no difference at idle, when properly clean carbs, and link & sinc.

Whether the motor is running 50:1 or 60:1, or even 32:1, that will not affect your idle noticeably.

A new pump kit with the updated wires and fittings for older motors is about $350.

I guess that answers my question about it making the motor idle worse. My only thought was that it was putting more oil through the motor than the motor might have been designed for.
