thermastat

I am new to this site, and my question is this. I have a 40 HP mercuary year 2001 and I noticed the thermastat spits water from a hole in the side of it. Is this normal?

No -- that is not normal and the reason the hole is there is to tell you the bypass valve has a problem. Go to your dealer and order a new thermostat (thats not the problem but install a new one anyway since you are in there). Order the new gasket for the housing, and a new bypass valve assembly. Clean things up, install the new parts and you are good to go.
