From what I've read, on here I think, that without thermstats the motor doesn't reach the proper operating temperature, which can cause premature wear on the motor. Don't know if this is true or not, but does make sense. Take it for what it's worth.

That's right. If you motor was designed to have a thermostat, then use it. They're cheap, reliable and easy as pie to replace. You wouldn't remove the t-stat from your car because your buddy told you to, would you? The t-stat ensures that your moor runs at optimal temperature so that you can get optimal performance. As far as the corrosion, that can be avoided by THOROUGHLY running your motor in fresh water for 10-15 minutes after you've been in the ocean. I'm luck y up here in N.FL that I almost always take a river to/from the beach, so my boat and motor get rinsed off on the way, but I always rinse everything down and run my motor in freshwater, just to be safe. Happy Boating.

Just like all water cooled motors that have thermostats, the restriction it provides make the cooling water flow properly to all parts of the motor. without them in place you will end up with hot spots in the motor.
So keep them in and replace as needed

Re: thermastats on a johnson removed

Here is a pretty good explaination I just posted on another thread.

The thermostat of an inboard plays a very crucial role in warming the engine to a satisfactory operating temperature. If an outboard is operated without a thermostat installed, it will surely suffer in some way from poor performance all the way to causing internal damage. An outboard is designed to operate at specific engine temperatures, and if it does not obtain that temperature, it will run very sluggishly, and also cause fuel/oil mixture to not totally burn, which causes excessive carbon buildup. Carbon buildup in an outboard is one of its worst enemies. This condition usually most often causes problems with the piston rings becoming stuck in the piston ring grooves. If this happens, you can pretty well kiss your powerhead goodbye, because it most certainly will allow the piston to touch the cylinder wall, and immediate scoring will result. Once a piston/s is scored, it is only a matter of time before the engine will self destruct unless it is caught in time to perform an overhaul.

DON"T run w/o therms. Im the guy who asked the question earlier. I'm running engine right now w/o and one cyl bank is running 20 deg cooler than the other. NOT A GOOD THING

ok wow im having this issue now.. my dad gave me his old boat i was doing some work due to an alarm horn going off.. troubleshooted it back tothe horn itself. VRO was good and both temps were not sending the signal.. either way i disconected VRO and am runing 50:1 mixed. wanted to test the engine temp so i got my laser therm. and one side was running 90deg and the other 150deg... was on another page when i googled and came accross this. so i called my old man and he told me the therms where removed by the Mechanic. it was his IDEA! not my dads!

WOW I dont think youll find a tech here on iBoats that will advise running w/o therms. That heat difference from one side of the power head to the other will seemingly lead to serious problems like warpage
