thermostat assembly

hey guys, my 3.8l thermostat was totally gone,

now replacing...
where does the o-ring go?
does it go between thermostat and housing or does it go on the backside of the thermostat and lock it into the housing?

I believe it goes between thermostat and thermostat cover.

You put the thermostat in the housing and then the o-ring is installed to hold the thermostat into place.

Place the thermostat in to the housing, then put the o-ring in the groove above it, gently slide it around with a screwdriver and make sure it is seated, the o-ring holds the thermostat in to the housing, if you place the o-ring between the housing and thermostat as suggested, the thermostat will just fall out.
