I started my motor and was feeling the temperature of the heads with my fingers. I noticed right off that the starboard side was getting alot hotter than the other side. I could leave my fingers on the other side for several seconds and only maybe one on the starboard. I think it's probably one of the tstats not opening up. I going to replace both and all the OEM manual refers to is replacing them when you have the motor broken down. It's a pretty tight fit down there but I think I can get the three bolts out - getting all the tstat parts back in might be another matter though! I thought about removing the exhaust cover and manifold to gain better access. Is this the best way?

Youre right, they are tough to get at, especially on a "bubble back".

You can gain some access by dropping the lower pan about an inch or two.

What about doing what I indicated above - removing the exhaust cover and manifold(the bubbleback). How do you go about dropping the lower pan. I've looked at that and wasn't quite sure which bolts held it on.

Removing the bubble back will certainly help, but that's not all.

First off, you have to remove the cover that fits between the leg and the lower pan. Note: the bolts face forward.

Once that's done, there are bolts, under the hood that hold the pan up, I think there are four.

Thanks DJ, I'll take a look up under there when I get home. I've already removed the cover that fits between the leg and the low pan. It sounds like if I can lower the pan a few inches it shouldn't be too difficult to access the tstat housing. How far can you lower the pan? What about the posts concerning the vent slot in the thermastat (drilling an extra hole or something). Do you know anything about that?

I've never done that, yet I have read about it here.

Do a search on this board of hale Dhadley.
